Basic Concept of Secondary Growth in Plants
एक young plant की stem को ध्यान से देखें तो शुरुआत में वह relatively पतली दिखाई देती है। समय के साथ वही stem धीरे-धीरे मोटी, मजबूत और कई बार woody दिखाई देने लगती है। केवल plant की height या length बढ़ने से stem की यह बढ़ी हुई thickness explain नहीं होती। यहाँ plant में growth का एक दूसरा aspect सामने आता है—girth या thickness में increase।
Plant development को समझते समय यही difference बहुत useful है। एक तरफ root और shoot की length बढ़ती है, जिससे plant आगे की ओर grow करता है; दूसरी तरफ कुछ plants में stem और root का diameter बढ़ता जाता है। इस बढ़ती हुई मोटाई के पीछे होने वाली developmental process को broadly Secondary Growth से जोड़ा जाता है।
Plant में Growth केवल Length बढ़ने तक सीमित नहीं है
Growth को केवल plant की height बढ़ने के रूप में देखना incomplete होगा। Plant body में अलग-अलग directions में changes होते हैं। Root का आगे बढ़ना, shoot का ऊपर की ओर develop होना और stem या root का diameter बढ़ना—इन सबके पीछे अलग-अलग meristematic activities और developmental processes काम कर सकते हैं।
Young stage में plant के growing regions में Primary Growth अधिक स्पष्ट होती है। इससे plant के root और shoot की primary body develop होती है और उनकी length में increase होता है। लेकिन जब कोई plant mature होता जाता है, विशेषकर woody plants में, केवल लंबाई बढ़ना पर्याप्त नहीं रहता। बढ़ते हुए plant body को अधिक structural strength और wider conducting system की आवश्यकता पड़ती है।
इसीलिए mature stem या root को केवल एक लंबी structure की तरह नहीं, बल्कि ऐसी living system की तरह समझना चाहिए जिसका diameter भी समय के साथ बदल सकता है। यह change ही Secondary Growth के concept तक पहुँचने का आधार बनता है।
Primary Growth और Secondary Growth: दोनों को अलग कैसे समझें?
Primary Growth और Secondary Growth plant development की दो अलग लेकिन connected processes हैं। इन्हें एक-दूसरे के opposite नहीं समझना चाहिए। Plant की growth के दौरान दोनों का अपना specific contribution होता है।
Primary growth मुख्यतः plant organ की length और primary body के development से associated होती है। इसके लिए shoot और root के growing regions में मौजूद primary meristems महत्वपूर्ण होते हैं। दूसरी ओर, Secondary Growth मुख्यतः plant organ के girth या diameter में increase से related होती है और इसका संबंध lateral meristematic activity से होता है।
सरल शब्दों में, Primary Growth plant को longitudinal direction में आगे बढ़ाने में मदद करती है, जबकि Secondary Growth विशेष रूप से उन plants में body को radial direction में expand करने से जुड़ी होती है। लेकिन वास्तविक plant development में दोनों processes एक-दूसरे से पूरी तरह अलग होकर नहीं चलतीं।

यहाँ एक बात साफ रखना जरूरी है: Secondary Growth का अर्थ केवल “stem मोटी हो गई” नहीं है। यह एक developmental process है जो lateral meristems की activity से closely associated है और जिसके दौरान secondary tissues तथा protective tissues के development से plant body में structural changes आते हैं।
Plant को Secondary Growth की जरूरत क्यों पड़ती है?
जैसे-जैसे plant बड़ा होता है, उसके ऊपर आने वाला structural load भी बढ़ता है। एक छोटा young stem अपने limited size के लिए जितना support पर्याप्त समझती है, वही support एक बड़े और लंबे-lived plant के लिए पर्याप्त नहीं होगा। इसलिए mature plant body में केवल length का बढ़ना ही महत्वपूर्ण नहीं रहता; girth का बढ़ना भी functional requirement बन सकता है।
एक बड़े plant में stem को अपने branches, leaves और पूरे aerial body को support करना होता है। इसी तरह root को भी soil में plant को anchor करने और बढ़ते हुए shoot system के साथ mechanical stability बनाए रखने में अधिक structural capacity की जरूरत पड़ती है। Increased diameter इस structural requirement को पूरा करने में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान दे सकता है।
इसके साथ vascular system की structural requirement भी जुड़ी होती है। जैसे-जैसे plant body का आकार बढ़ता है, long-distance transport के लिए conducting tissues का development और organization भी महत्वपूर्ण हो जाता है। Secondary growth से बनने वाले secondary vascular tissues mature plant में इस changing requirement के साथ जुड़े होते हैं।
इसी कारण woody plants में Secondary Growth विशेष रूप से prominent दिखाई देती है। ऐसे plants लंबे समय तक जीवित रह सकते हैं और उनका stem समय के साथ काफी diameter प्राप्त कर सकता है। हालांकि, सभी plants में Secondary Growth की intensity, pattern और extent समान नहीं होती।
Secondary Growth किन Plants में सामान्यतः दिखाई देती है?
Secondary Growth का सामान्य और स्पष्ट रूप विशेष रूप से woody dicot stems और roots में देखा जाता है। इन plants में lateral meristems की activity plant body के radial expansion में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाती है। कई gymnosperms में भी secondary growth एक सामान्य developmental feature है और उनके stems में substantial increase in girth देखा जा सकता है।
इसके विपरीत, अधिकांश monocots में typical vascular-cambium-based secondary growth सामान्य dicot pattern की तरह नहीं होती। इसका कारण उनके vascular system और meristematic organization की अलग developmental arrangement है। इसलिए यह कहना सही नहीं होगा कि हर plant में stem thickness बढ़ाने की एक ही सामान्य mechanism होती है।
कुछ plants में girth increase के लिए unusual या modified developmental patterns भी मिलते हैं। यही बात आगे anomalous secondary growth के अध्ययन को interesting बनाती है। BRABU के इस Unit में Tinospora, Bignonia, Bougainvillea और Dracaena जैसे examples इसी broader context में पढ़े जाते हैं। इनके specific anomalous patterns को यहाँ detail में नहीं लेना है; अभी केवल इतना समझना पर्याप्त है कि secondary thickening का pattern हर plant में identical नहीं होता।
Lateral Meristem: Girth बढ़ाने वाली Meristematic Activity की शुरुआत
अब एक basic biological connection बनता है। यदि plant body की thickness या girth में लगातार increase होना है, तो इसके लिए ऐसे cells की जरूरत होगी जो plant organ की longitudinal tip पर नहीं, बल्कि उसके lateral region में meristematic activity कर सकें। इसी concept से Lateral Meristem सामने आता है।
Lateral meristems वे meristematic tissues हैं जो plant organ के relatively lateral या cylindrical regions में स्थित होते हैं और radial growth तथा secondary development से closely associated रहते हैं। इनकी activity plant organ के diameter को बढ़ाने वाली developmental changes में योगदान देती है।
यहाँ Apical Meristem और Lateral Meristem का basic difference समझना useful है। Apical meristem growing tip पर associated होता है और primary growth से closely related है, जबकि lateral meristem organ के side regions में associated होकर secondary growth में महत्वपूर्ण role निभाता है।
Vascular Cambium: Secondary Growth का एक प्रमुख Meristem
Lateral meristems की चर्चा के बाद Secondary Growth का सबसे important नाम सामने आता है—Vascular Cambium। यह एक lateral meristematic tissue है जो vascular system के secondary development में central role निभाता है।
Stem में vascular cambium primary vascular tissues के बीच के vascular region के आसपास एक meristematic zone के रूप में associated होता है। Mature stem में इसकी arrangement को broadly एक cambial ring के concept से समझा जाता है। इस stage पर इतना समझना पर्याप्त है कि यह cambial system आगे secondary vascular tissues के development से जुड़ता है।
इसका महत्व इसलिए बढ़ जाता है क्योंकि mature plant को केवल existing primary conducting tissues पर निर्भर नहीं रहना पड़ता। Plant के diameter और functional requirements में बदलाव के साथ vascular system में भी secondary development होता है। इस development के पीछे vascular cambium का महत्वपूर्ण योगदान होता है।
अभी vascular cambium की exact origin, अलग-अलग cambial regions की formation या इसकी detailed cell divisions में जाने की आवश्यकता नहीं है। इन processes को समझने के लिए पहले यह basic connection clear होना चाहिए कि vascular cambium एक lateral meristem है और secondary vascular development से closely associated है।
Cork Cambium या Phellogen का Basic Idea
Secondary growth के साथ केवल अंदर का vascular system ही change नहीं होता। जैसे-जैसे stem या root का diameter बढ़ता है, उसकी outer surface को भी उस increasing girth के साथ adjust करना पड़ता है। यही कारण है कि secondary development को केवल vascular tissues तक सीमित करके देखना incomplete होगा।
इस context में दूसरा important lateral meristem है Cork Cambium, जिसे Phellogen भी कहा जाता है। यह protective tissue development से associated lateral meristem है और plant organ की outer region में होने वाले secondary changes में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाता है।
सरल तरीके से देखें तो vascular cambium को secondary vascular development से और cork cambium को outer protective development से जोड़कर समझा जा सकता है। दोनों का broad role अलग है, लेकिन दोनों secondary development के overall picture को समझने में important हैं।
Cork cambium से बनने वाले specific tissues, periderm की organization और bark formation जैसी details अभी आगे के लिए रखनी चाहिए। इस stage पर मुख्य उद्देश्य केवल इतना समझना है कि plant की बढ़ती हुई girth के साथ outer protective system में भी developmental adjustment की जरूरत होती है।
Secondary Growth को एक Connected Biological Process की तरह समझें
अब पूरे concept को अलग-अलग definitions की तरह याद करने के बजाय एक continuous biological sequence के रूप में देखना अधिक आसान होगा। Plant के growing regions में primary development के कारण उसका root और shoot length तथा primary body में आगे बढ़ते हैं। जैसे-जैसे plant mature और बड़ा होता है, कई plants में केवल longitudinal growth पर्याप्त नहीं रहती; increased girth और structural support की आवश्यकता भी सामने आती है।
इस requirement के साथ lateral meristems का importance बढ़ता है। इनमें vascular cambium secondary vascular development से और cork cambium outer protective development से broadly associated होता है। इनके कारण plant body में ऐसे secondary changes संभव होते हैं जो mature stem और root की increasing size तथा functional needs के साथ जुड़े रहते हैं।
इसलिए conceptual flow को इस तरह समझा जा सकता है: Primary growth से plant body की initial length और organization develop होती है → plant mature और बड़ा होता है → girth और structural requirements बढ़ती हैं → lateral meristems important होते हैं → vascular cambium और cork cambium secondary development में contribute करते हैं → secondary tissues और protective tissues से जुड़े changes develop होते हैं।
यही basic foundation आगे Normal Secondary Growth को समझने के लिए जरूरी है। अब अगली चर्चा में यह देखना होगा कि normal condition में cambial system किस तरह organize होता है और उसकी activity के परिणामस्वरूप secondary tissues किस प्रकार develop होते हैं।
Normal Secondary Growth in Dicot Stem: Vascular Cambium की Activity
हमने समझा कि plant की length बढ़ने वाली growth और girth बढ़ने वाली growth एक जैसी नहीं होती। अब इसी concept को stem की actual internal structure से जोड़ते हैं।
एक young dicot stem को cross-section में देखने पर vascular bundles अलग-अलग groups में दिखाई देते हैं। उस समय secondary growth के लिए continuous cambial system पूरी तरह organized नहीं होता। आगे चलकर कुछ existing meristematic regions और कुछ newly active cells मिलकर एक continuous cambium ring बनाते हैं। यहीं से normal secondary growth का main mechanism शुरू होता है।
Vascular Cambium कहाँ से आता है?
Dicot stem में vascular cambium की पूरी story एक ही जगह से शुरू नहीं होती। Vascular bundle के अंदर मौजूद cambium और bundles के बीच के region में बनने वाली cambial activity—दोनों इसमें contribution देते हैं।
Intrafascicular Cambium
Intrafascicular cambium का मतलब है vascular bundle के अंदर स्थित cambium। इसे fascicular cambium भी कहा जाता है।
Young dicot stem के vascular bundles में यह cambium primary xylem और primary phloem के बीच मौजूद रहता है। शुरुआत में इसकी position individual vascular bundles के अंदर होती है।
Interfascicular Region और Cambial Development
अब vascular bundles के बीच के हिस्से पर ध्यान दें। इन regions में मौजूद कुछ parenchymatous cells बाद में meristematic activity प्राप्त कर सकते हैं। इन्हीं से interfascicular cambium develop होता है।
Interfascicular cambium vascular bundles के बीच स्थित होता है। इसका development existing intrafascicular cambium के साथ connection बनाने में important होता है।
इस तरह अलग-अलग vascular bundles के cambial portions धीरे-धीरे interconnected होकर एक continuous cambial system बनाने लगते हैं। यही continuous system आगे cambium ring के रूप में समझा जाता है।
Cambium Ring: अलग-अलग Cambial Regions का Continuous System
जब intrafascicular और interfascicular cambial regions आपस में connect हो जाते हैं, तो stem के अंदर एक continuous ring-like cambial zone बनता है। इसे cambium ring कहते हैं।
अब cambium केवल अलग-अलग vascular bundles तक limited नहीं रहता। यह stem के circumference के चारों ओर continuous meristematic system की तरह काम कर सकता है।
यही point normal secondary growth को समझने के लिए बहुत important है, क्योंकि इसके बाद cambium की activity stem के अंदर नए vascular tissues के continuous development से जुड़ जाती है।

Cambium की Activity: Stem के अंदर और बाहर नए Tissues
Cambium ring बनने के बाद अगला सवाल है—यह cambium करता क्या है?
Cambium की divisions से नए cells बनते हैं। इन newly formed cells का development stem के अंदर और बाहर की directions में होता है। सामान्य dicot stem में cambium की activity से secondary xylem अंदर की ओर और secondary phloem बाहर की ओर develop होता है।
इसे एक simple arrangement से समझ सकते हैं:
Outside → Secondary Phloem → Vascular Cambium → Secondary Xylem → Inside
इस arrangement में cambium एक boundary की तरह काम करता है। इसकी दोनों तरफ बनने वाले secondary tissues stem की internal organization और increasing girth में योगदान देते हैं।
Periclinal Division: Secondary Tissues बनने की दिशा
Cambial cells की divisions को समझने के लिए दो terms useful हैं—periclinal division और anticlinal division।
Periclinal division में division plane cambial cylinder की surface के लगभग parallel होता है। इससे cambial derivatives की नई layers बनती हैं।
Normal secondary growth में यही activity secondary vascular tissues के development से directly जुड़ी होती है। Cambium की एक तरफ बनने वाली cells आगे secondary xylem की ओर differentiate करती हैं, जबकि दूसरी तरफ बनने वाली cells secondary phloem की ओर develop होती हैं।
Secondary xylem सामान्यतः cambium के अंदर की ओर accumulate होता रहता है। इसी कारण mature woody stem में xylem का हिस्सा काफी बड़ा दिखाई दे सकता है।
Anticlinal Division: Cambium को बढ़ते Circumference के साथ कैसे बनाए रखा जाता है?
Stem का diameter लगातार बढ़ रहा है। ऐसे में cambium की अपनी circumference भी बढ़नी पड़ेगी। केवल नई xylem और phloem layers बनाना पर्याप्त नहीं होगा; cambial cylinder को भी बढ़ते हुए stem के साथ adjust करना पड़ेगा।
यहाँ anticlinal divisions का महत्व सामने आता है। इन divisions में cell division plane cambial surface के लगभग perpendicular होता है। इससे cambial initials की संख्या circumference की दिशा में बढ़ सकती है और cambium बढ़ते हुए stem के साथ अपना continuous system बनाए रखता है।
Periclinal division → नए secondary tissue layers बनने में मदद करती है।
Anticlinal division → cambial system को बढ़ती circumference के साथ maintain करने में मदद करती है।
Secondary Xylem और Secondary Phloem बनने से Girth कैसे बढ़ती है?
अब पूरे process को stem की thickness से connect करें। Cambium लगातार अपनी activity बनाए रखता है और उसके द्वारा produced cells आगे secondary vascular tissues में differentiate होती हैं।
हर growth period में बनने वाला secondary xylem पहले बने xylem के बाहर की ओर add होता जाता है, जबकि secondary phloem cambium के बाहर की तरफ develop होता है। इस तरह stem में नए tissues का addition होता रहता है।
विशेष रूप से secondary xylem के लगातार accumulation का stem की बढ़ती girth पर बड़ा प्रभाव पड़ता है। इसी के साथ outer tissues को भी इस बढ़ते diameter के साथ adjust करना पड़ता है, जिसके लिए protective secondary development का role आगे समझना जरूरी होगा।
इसलिए secondary growth को केवल “cambium ने कुछ cells बना दिए” के रूप में याद करना सही नहीं होगा। असल में यह continuous cambial activity + secondary tissue production + radial expansion से जुड़ा हुआ developmental process है।
Cambial Activity हमेशा एक जैसी नहीं रहती
Woody plants में cambium की activity पूरे साल बिल्कुल समान rate से चलती रहे, ऐसा जरूरी नहीं है। Environmental conditions और seasonal changes इसके activity pattern को influence कर सकते हैं।
जब growing conditions favourable होती हैं, जैसे पर्याप्त water और suitable temperature उपलब्ध हो, तब cambial activity comparatively अधिक हो सकती है। दूसरी ओर, unfavourable season या environmental conditions में activity कम हो सकती है या कुछ plants में काफी धीमी पड़ सकती है।
इसी changing cambial activity का relationship आगे बनने वाले xylem की characteristics से भी जुड़ सकता है। इसी concept से आगे early wood, late wood और annual rings जैसे topics को समझना आसान होगा। उनकी detailed discussion अभी अलग से की जाएगी।
Normal Secondary Growth को एक Process की तरह जोड़ें
Young dicot stem में vascular bundles के अंदर मौजूद intrafascicular cambium और bundles के बीच develop होने वाला interfascicular cambium आपस में connect होते हैं। इससे continuous cambium ring बनता है।
इसके बाद cambium की activity stem के radial development को आगे बढ़ाती है। Periclinal divisions से secondary tissue layers के development का आधार बनता है, जबकि anticlinal divisions cambium को बढ़ती हुई circumference के साथ maintain करने में मदद करती हैं।
Cambium की inner side पर secondary xylem और outer side पर secondary phloem develop होते हैं। इन tissues के लगातार addition से stem की internal structure बदलती जाती है और उसकी girth धीरे-धीरे बढ़ती है।
Intrafascicular cambium + Interfascicular cambium → Cambium ring → Cambial divisions → Secondary xylem अंदर की ओर + Secondary phloem बाहर की ओर → Stem की girth में increase
यहीं से normal secondary growth की basic mechanism clear होती है। लेकिन cambium से बनने वाले secondary xylem और secondary phloem की अपनी structure, position और importance को अलग से समझना जरूरी है। इसी के साथ seasonal activity के कारण बनने वाले growth rings और wood की internal differences भी सामने आती हैं।
Secondary Xylem, Secondary Phloem और Annual Rings: Wood Formation की समझ
Stem में secondary tissues बनने के बाद उसकी internal structure पहले जैसी नहीं रहती। खासकर secondary xylem लगातार जमा होता जाता है और mature woody stem का बड़ा हिस्सा बना सकता है। इसी xylem में growth के दौरान होने वाले बदलावों से wood की layers और annual rings जैसी structures दिखाई देती हैं।
Secondary Xylem की बनावट
Secondary xylem वह vascular tissue है जो vascular cambium की inner side पर develop होता है। इसमें conducting और supporting दोनों प्रकार के elements पाए जाते हैं।
इसमें सामान्यतः tracheids, vessels, xylem fibres और xylem parenchyma जैसे elements शामिल होते हैं। इनका exact proportion अलग-अलग plant groups में अलग हो सकता है।

Secondary Xylem का Accumulation
हर नए growth period में नया secondary xylem पुराने xylem के बाहर की तरफ जुड़ता है। इसलिए stem के centre की ओर स्थित xylem अपेक्षाकृत पुराना होता है, जबकि cambium के पास का xylem comparatively नया होता है।
समय के साथ xylem का यह accumulation wood formation का आधार बनता है। इसी वजह से पुराने woody stems में central region बहुत विकसित दिखाई देता है।
नया secondary xylem बाहर की ओर बनता है, लेकिन पहले बने xylem के बाहर जुड़ता जाता है। इसलिए stem का पुराना xylem centre की ओर और नया xylem cambium के पास मिलता है।
Early Wood और Late Wood
Favourable और less favourable growth periods में cambial activity तथा xylem formation की characteristics एक जैसी नहीं रहतीं। इसी कारण एक growth cycle के दौरान बनने वाले xylem में अलग-अलग appearance और cellular features देखे जा सकते हैं।
Early Wood
Early wood को spring wood भी कहा जाता है। यह उस period में बनता है जब growth conditions comparatively favourable होती हैं और water requirement अधिक होती है।
इस समय बनने वाली xylem elements, विशेषकर vessels, कई woody dicots में अपेक्षाकृत बड़े lumen वाली हो सकती हैं और tissue comparatively less dense दिखाई दे सकता है। इसका प्रमुख संबंध efficient water conduction से है।
Late Wood
Late wood को autumn wood भी कहा जाता है। यह growth season के बाद के हिस्से में बनता है, जब cambial activity और growth conditions पहले की तुलना में कम हो सकती हैं।
Late wood में सामान्यतः cells का lumen छोटा और walls comparatively अधिक thick हो सकती हैं। इसलिए यह tissue अधिक dense दिखाई दे सकता है और mechanical strength में भी योगदान देता है।

Annual Rings या Growth Rings
जब एक growth cycle के दौरान बनने वाले early wood और late wood के बीच स्पष्ट difference होता है, तो transverse section में concentric rings दिखाई दे सकते हैं। इन्हें annual rings या growth rings कहा जाता है।
एक ring को केवल “एक dark line” मानना सही नहीं है। वास्तव में यह एक growth period के दौरान बने secondary xylem के pattern से संबंधित structure है। Early wood और late wood के cellular differences ring को visually distinguish करने में मदद करते हैं।
Favourable growth → Early wood → बाद का slower growth → Late wood → दोनों के contrast से growth ring दिखाई दे सकती है।
क्या हर Stem में Annual Rings बिल्कुल साफ दिखाई देती हैं?
नहीं। Annual rings की visibility plant और उसके growing environment पर depend करती है। जिन plants में growth conditions के seasonal changes स्पष्ट होते हैं, वहाँ rings अधिक distinct हो सकती हैं।
इसके विपरीत, tropical regions के कुछ plants में temperature और moisture conditions पूरे वर्ष relatively suitable रह सकती हैं। ऐसे cases में growth pattern कम स्पष्ट हो सकता है और annual rings हमेशा sharply defined नहीं होतीं।
इसलिए हर visible ring को बिना context के एक निश्चित calendar year के बराबर मानना scientifically safe नहीं है। Growth rings की interpretation species और environmental conditions को ध्यान में रखकर की जाती है।
Annual Rings से Age Determination
Woody plants में distinct annual growth rings होने पर stem या trunk की approximate age का estimation किया जा सकता है। इसके लिए transverse section में growth rings को observe किया जाता है।
लेकिन यह method तभी reliable होता है जब rings वास्तव में नियमित annual growth cycles को represent करती हों। Unusual environmental conditions, irregular growth या species-specific patterns result को प्रभावित कर सकते हैं।
Heartwood और Sapwood
Mature woody stem के secondary xylem को केवल एक समान mass नहीं समझना चाहिए। अंदर की ओर पुराना xylem और बाहर की ओर comparatively younger functional xylem के बीच functional differences विकसित हो सकते हैं। इसी आधार पर heartwood और sapwood की concept आती है।
Heartwood
Heartwood stem के central, older xylem region से संबंधित होता है। इसकी conducting activity सामान्यतः बहुत कम या नगण्य होती है। इसमें विभिन्न substances जमा हो सकते हैं, जैसे tannins, resins, oils, gums और अन्य extractives।
इन substances के कारण heartwood अक्सर darker और अधिक durable दिखाई दे सकता है। इसकी प्रमुख भूमिका mechanical support में होती है।
Sapwood
Sapwood outer, comparatively younger xylem region है। इसमें living xylem parenchyma और conducting elements की functional activity अधिक हो सकती है।
इसका मुख्य संबंध water and mineral conduction से होता है। Sapwood और heartwood के बीच boundary सभी plants में equally sharp नहीं होती।

Secondary Phloem: बाहरी तरफ बनने वाला Conducting Tissue
Secondary phloem cambium की outer side पर develop होता है। इसका मुख्य कार्य leaves और अन्य source regions से बने organic food materials को plant के अलग-अलग parts तक translocate करना है।
Secondary phloem में sieve elements, companion cells, phloem parenchyma और कई plants में phloem fibres जैसे components पाए जा सकते हैं। इसकी conducting efficiency और arrangement plant species तथा age के साथ बदल सकती है।
Food translocation को केवल “ऊपर से नीचे” या “एक ही direction” में याद नहीं करना चाहिए। Phloem transport source और sink के relationship पर depend करता है, इसलिए direction plant की physiological जरूरत के अनुसार बदल सकती है।
Wood Formation का Overall Picture
Secondary xylem का लगातार addition woody stem की internal thickness को बढ़ाता है। अलग-अलग growth periods में xylem की cellular characteristics बदल सकती हैं। जहाँ seasonal contrast स्पष्ट हो, वहाँ early wood और late wood के बीच का difference growth rings को visible बनाता है।
इसी mature xylem में उम्र और physiological changes के साथ sapwood और heartwood जैसे regions भी पहचाने जा सकते हैं। दूसरी ओर, cambium की outer side पर बनने वाला secondary phloem food translocation system का महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा बना रहता है।

Cork Cambium, Periderm और Bark: Secondary Protective Tissue का Development
Woody stem में diameter बढ़ने के साथ एक practical problem सामने आती है। बाहर मौजूद epidermis और उसके नीचे के कुछ tissues इतनी तेजी से expand नहीं कर पाते जितनी तेजी से अंदर secondary tissues का development होता है। ऐसे में plant एक नया protective system develop करता है, जिसे periderm कहा जाता है।
Periderm के development में सबसे important role cork cambium या phellogen का होता है। यह भी एक lateral meristem है, लेकिन इसका मुख्य काम conducting tissue बनाना नहीं, बल्कि protective tissue का development करना है।
Cork Cambium या Phellogen क्या है?
Cork cambium (Phellogen) एक secondary meristem है जो stem के बाहरी region में develop होता है। इसकी activity से दो प्रकार के tissues बनते हैं—बाहर की तरफ phellem और अंदर की तरफ phelloderm।
Phellogen → Phellem बाहर की ओर + Phelloderm अंदर की ओर
यह relationship बहुत useful है, क्योंकि तीनों terms के नाम similar होने के कारण अक्सर confusion हो जाता है।

Phellogen कहाँ से Develop होता है?
Phellogen की origin सभी plants में बिल्कुल एक जैसी नहीं होती। सामान्य woody dicot stems में यह अक्सर outer cortex या उसके निकट के living parenchymatous cells से develop हो सकता है। कुछ plants में इसकी origin deeper tissues से भी हो सकती है।
इसलिए केवल यह याद करना कि “phellogen हमेशा epidermis से बनता है” सही नहीं है। इसकी exact origin plant species और stem की developmental condition पर depend करती है।
Phellogen एक secondary lateral meristem है। इसकी position stem के outer region में होती है, लेकिन इसकी exact origin अलग-अलग plants में अलग हो सकती है।
Phellogen की Activity का Direction
Phellogen की activity को direction के साथ याद करना सबसे आसान है। यह अपनी दोनों sides पर cells produce कर सकता है।

यहाँ left-right arrangement केवल concept समझाने के लिए है। वास्तविक stem section में phellogen एक layer या layers के रूप में surrounding protective system का हिस्सा बनता है।
Phellem: Cork Tissue
Phellem phellogen की बाहरी तरफ बनने वाला tissue है। इसकी cells mature होने पर सामान्यतः dead हो जाती हैं और उनकी walls में suberin जमा हो जाता है।
Suberin की presence cells को relatively impermeable बनाती है। इसी कारण phellem water loss और बाहरी environmental effects से protection देने में महत्वपूर्ण है।
Cork की cells compact arrangement में हो सकती हैं और इनके बीच air spaces भी मिल सकते हैं। यह tissue stem की surface को protective covering प्रदान करता है।
Phelloderm: Inner Living Tissue
Phelloderm phellogen की inner side पर बनने वाला tissue है। यह सामान्यतः living parenchymatous cells से बना होता है।
इसमें storage जैसी activities हो सकती हैं और कुछ plants में यह surrounding living tissues के साथ metabolic functions में योगदान देता है।
Periderm कैसे बनता है?
जब phellogen active होकर phellem और phelloderm बनाता है, तो ये tissues मिलकर periderm का basic structure बनाते हैं।
यानी periderm केवल cork नहीं है। Cork यानी phellem इसका एक component है, जबकि phellogen और phelloderm भी इसके development का हिस्सा हैं।
जैसे-जैसे periderm develop होता है, stem की outer protective organization बदलती जाती है। पुराने surface tissues धीरे-धीरे अपना original functional role खो सकते हैं और बाहरी protective layers का महत्व बढ़ जाता है।
Epidermis और Cortex पर इसका क्या प्रभाव पड़ता है?
Young stem की surface पर epidermis protective covering का काम करती है। लेकिन stem के diameter में लगातार increase होने पर epidermis के cells को expanding surface के साथ adjust करना कठिन हो जाता है।
Secondary protective growth के दौरान बनने वाला periderm धीरे-धीरे outer covering की भूमिका संभालता है। पुराने epidermal और कुछ cortical tissues stretch, rupture या अलग हो सकते हैं।
यह बदलाव एकदम अचानक नहीं होता। Stem की increasing girth और नए protective tissue के development के साथ outer layers का arrangement बदलता रहता है।
Periderm का Protective Role
Periderm को plant की बाहरी सुरक्षा व्यवस्था की तरह समझा जा सकता है। इसके कई practical functions हैं:
- Water loss कम करना: suberized phellem बाहरी surface से excessive water loss को reduce करता है।
- Mechanical protection: अंदर के living tissues को physical damage से बचाने में मदद करता है।
- Temperature और environmental stress से protection: बाहरी conditions के direct effect को कम करता है।
- Pathogen entry को सीमित करना: intact protective covering कई harmful organisms के entry को रोकने में सहायता करती है।
Lenticels: Protective Covering में Gas Exchange
एक important problem यहाँ आती है। अगर phellem बहुत compact और water-resistant है, तो अंदर के living tissues को gases का exchange कैसे मिलेगा?
इसके लिए woody stems में lenticels जैसी specialized regions मिलती हैं। ये loosely arranged complementary cells से बनी areas होती हैं और इनके through internal tissues तथा atmosphere के बीच gas exchange संभव होता है।
Periderm बाहरी सुरक्षा बढ़ाता है, लेकिन stem को पूरी तरह gas-tight नहीं होना चाहिए। Lenticels gas exchange के लिए important openings/regions provide करती हैं।
Bark और Periderm में Difference
Botany में bark और periderm को एक ही चीज मान लेना common mistake है। दोनों related हैं, लेकिन exactly same नहीं हैं।

इस तरह secondary protective growth stem को केवल बाहर से cover नहीं करती, बल्कि बढ़ती हुई woody axis के साथ एक नया protective system develop करती है। यह system water loss को control करने, physical protection देने और internal tissues को बाहरी environment से अलग रखने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाता है।
Normal Secondary Growth का Complete Process: Young Stem से Woody Stem तक
एक young dicot stem की internal structure समय के साथ धीरे-धीरे बदलती है। जैसे-जैसे plant mature होता है, stem केवल लंबा ही नहीं होता बल्कि उसका diameter भी बढ़ता है। इस पूरे परिवर्तन में vascular tissues, cambial activity और protective tissues एक-दूसरे से जुड़े हुए काम करते हैं।
इस process को अलग-अलग structures के रूप में याद करने के बजाय एक continuous developmental sequence की तरह समझना ज्यादा आसान है।
Young Stem से शुरुआत
Young dicot stem में vascular bundles primary vascular tissues से बने होते हैं। इनके बीच और इनके अंदर मौजूद कुछ meristematic regions आगे चलकर secondary growth में active role लेते हैं।
जैसे-जैसे stem mature होता है, vascular bundles के बीच की cambial activity existing cambial portions से connect होकर एक continuous cambial cylinder बनाने में मदद करती है। इसके बाद secondary vascular tissues का production अधिक organized तरीके से चलता है।

Stem के अंदर Tissue Addition का Pattern
Continuous cambial activity के बाद stem में नई vascular tissues की layers जुड़ती रहती हैं। इस addition का एक निश्चित spatial pattern होता है।

Secondary xylem के लगातार addition के कारण stem के अंदर woody region का विस्तार होता जाता है। वहीं secondary phloem की नई cells बाहर की ओर जुड़ती रहती हैं, हालांकि पुराने phloem tissues समय के साथ दब सकते हैं या अपनी conducting efficiency खो सकते हैं।
Girth Increase केवल “नई Layer बनने” से नहीं समझें
Stem की thickness बढ़ने का मतलब सिर्फ इतना नहीं है कि एक नई xylem layer जुड़ी और stem मोटा हो गया। जैसे-जैसे diameter बढ़ता है, existing tissues को भी नए आकार के अनुसार adjust करना पड़ता है।
Cambium की activity stem की circumference के साथ बनी रहे, इसके लिए cambial initials की संख्या और arrangement में भी adjustment होता है। इसी वजह से developing stem में cambium एक expanding cylindrical system की तरह behave करता है।
अंदर बनने वाला secondary xylem इस radial expansion में सबसे बड़ा योगदान देता है। बाहरी tissues को भी इस बढ़ते circumference के साथ accommodate करना पड़ता है, और यहीं secondary protective growth का महत्व सामने आता है।
Wood Formation और Stem की Maturity
समय के साथ secondary xylem layers जमा होने लगती हैं और stem में woody character बढ़ता जाता है। अलग-अलग growth periods में बनने वाले xylem की cellular properties भी बदल सकती हैं।
Suitable environmental conditions में बनने वाला xylem और comparatively slower growth period में बनने वाला xylem एक जैसा दिखाई नहीं देता। यदि seasonal difference स्पष्ट हो, तो यही variation growth rings के रूप में पहचाना जा सकता है।
पुराना xylem stem के अंदर की तरफ जमा रहता है, जबकि comparatively younger conducting xylem cambium के पास मिलता है। Mature woody stems में इसी age-related बदलाव के साथ xylem का functional organization भी बदल सकता है।

बढ़ती Girth के साथ Outer Surface में बदलाव
Stem के अंदर tissues बढ़ते रहें और बाहर केवल epidermis ही बनी रहे—यह लंबे समय तक संभव नहीं है। Diameter बढ़ने पर epidermis और outer cortex पर stretching बढ़ती है।
इस स्थिति में outer region में एक नया protective meristem सक्रिय हो सकता है। इससे phellem और phelloderm बनते हैं और periderm develop होता है।
इस तरह stem के अंदर vascular secondary growth और बाहर protective secondary growth एक-दूसरे से practically connected दिखाई देते हैं। दोनों का उद्देश्य अलग है, लेकिन mature stem के development में दोनों साथ-साथ महत्वपूर्ण हैं।
Normal Secondary Growth का Integrated Arrangement
Mature dicot stem को बाहर से अंदर की तरफ सोचें। सबसे बाहरी region में secondary protective tissues हो सकते हैं। इसके अंदर secondary phloem मिलता है। इसके बाद vascular cambium का narrow meristematic zone और उसके भीतर बड़ी मात्रा में secondary xylem मौजूद हो सकता है।

Normal secondary growth का यही integrated pattern dicot stem को समय के साथ अधिक मोटा, मजबूत और structurally complex बनाता है। अब secondary growth का अगला important aspect यह समझना है कि कुछ plants में यह सामान्य pattern follow क्यों नहीं करता और उनकी secondary thickening में unusual arrangements कैसे develop होते हैं।
Anomalous Secondary Growth: सामान्य Pattern से अलग Secondary Thickening
हर plant में stem का secondary growth बिल्कुल एक ही anatomical pattern से नहीं चलता। कुछ plants में lateral growth के दौरान vascular tissues का arrangement typical dicot stem जैसा नहीं रहता। ऐसे cases में secondary thickening का pathway थोड़ा अलग दिखाई देता है। इसी प्रकार के unusual developmental pattern को anomalous secondary growth कहा जाता है।
यहाँ “anomalous” शब्द का अर्थ abnormal disease या खराब growth नहीं है। इसका मतलब केवल इतना है कि secondary growth का anatomical method सामान्य expected pattern से अलग है।
Anomalous का मतलब क्या समझना चाहिए?
Botany में anomalous secondary growth उन situations को refer करता है जहाँ stem की secondary thickening के दौरान vascular cambium की activity, नए meristem की formation या vascular tissues का arrangement सामान्य pattern से अलग हो जाता है।
Anomalous secondary growth = Secondary growth का ऐसा pattern जो सामान्य anatomical arrangement से अलग हो।
इस difference को समझने के लिए केवल stem की मोटाई देखना पर्याप्त नहीं है। असली पहचान इस बात से होती है कि secondary tissues किस तरह बने और किस arrangement में दिखाई दे रहे हैं।
यह Variation किन कारणों से दिखाई दे सकता है?
Anomalous secondary growth किसी एक fixed mechanism से नहीं बनता। अलग-अलग plants में अलग developmental modifications इसके पीछे हो सकते हैं।
- Cambium का unusual behaviour — existing cambium का activity pattern typical arrangement से अलग हो सकता है।
- Additional meristematic tissue — कुछ plants में secondary thickening के लिए नए meristematic regions develop हो सकते हैं।
- Successive cambia — एक cambial ring की activity के बाद दूसरा cambial ring develop हो सकता है।
- Vascular tissue का unusual arrangement — secondary xylem और phloem typical continuous pattern के बजाय अलग-अलग groups या special arrangements में दिखाई दे सकते हैं।
- Monocot या special stem organization — कुछ plants में secondary thickening का mechanism सामान्य dicot cambial system से fundamentally अलग हो सकता है।
क्या Anomalous Secondary Growth का मतलब “गलत” Growth है?
नहीं। यह distinction बहुत important है। “Anomalous” का उपयोग यहाँ comparative anatomical sense में किया जाता है। Plant अपने normal developmental programme के अनुसार ही grow कर रहा होता है, लेकिन उसका secondary growth pattern textbook के typical dicot model से अलग होता है।
इसलिए किसी anomalous stem को देखकर यह conclusion नहीं निकालना चाहिए कि plant diseased है या उसकी growth खराब है। यह उसकी species-specific anatomical adaptation भी हो सकती है।
Anomalous = unusual anatomical pattern, जरूरी नहीं कि abnormal health condition हो।

Additional Meristem की भूमिका
कुछ anomalous stems में secondary thickening केवल पहले से मौजूद cambium की activity पर depend नहीं करती। Plant के किसी अन्य region में cells फिर से meristematic behaviour प्राप्त कर सकते हैं और secondary tissues बनाने लगते हैं।
ऐसे meristem को broadly additional cambium या additional meristematic tissue के रूप में describe किया जा सकता है। इसके activity pattern के कारण stem में vascular tissues का arrangement typical stem से अलग बन सकता है।
यह mechanism सभी anomalous plants में समान नहीं होता। इसलिए अलग-अलग examples को उनके specific anatomical pattern के साथ समझना जरूरी है।
Successive Cambia का Concept
कुछ plants में एक cambial ring की activity समाप्त होने या कम होने के बाद stem में एक नया cambial ring develop हो सकता है। इस तरह secondary growth एक ही cambial cylinder तक limited नहीं रहती।
ऐसे successive cambial rings की repeated activity से vascular tissues की कई layers या rings जैसी arrangement बन सकती है। यह anomalous secondary growth का एक महत्वपूर्ण mechanism है।

Vascular Arrangement में बदलाव
Anomalous growth का सबसे clear evidence अक्सर mature stem की anatomy में दिखाई देता है। Secondary vascular tissues कभी अलग-अलग patches, bands, rings या unusual vascular groups के रूप में मिल सकते हैं।
कहीं secondary xylem और phloem का relation सामान्य pattern से अलग हो सकता है, तो कहीं additional vascular bundles develop हो सकते हैं। कुछ plants में successive cambial activity के कारण concentric vascular zones भी बन सकती हैं।
इसलिए anomalous secondary growth की पहचान केवल stem की मोटाई से नहीं, बल्कि vascular tissue arrangement और meristematic activity के आधार पर की जाती है।
अलग Plants में Mechanism अलग क्यों हो सकता है?
Anomalous secondary growth कोई single anatomical formula नहीं है। यही इसकी सबसे important feature है। एक plant में unusual cambial behaviour दिखाई दे सकता है, दूसरे में successive cambia, जबकि किसी अन्य plant में special secondary thickening meristem काम कर सकता है।
इसी कारण Tinospora, Bignonia, Bougainvillea और Dracaena को एक ही mechanism से explain करना उचित नहीं होगा। इन plants के secondary growth patterns को अलग-अलग anatomical examples के रूप में देखना ज्यादा सही approach है।
Anomalous secondary growth में केवल “extra tissue” बनना ही मुख्य बात नहीं है। असली focus है—कौन-सा meristem active हुआ, उसने किस direction में काम किया और उससे vascular tissues का final arrangement कैसा बना।
Anomalous Secondary Growth को पहचानने का तरीका
किसी unknown stem section को देखते समय निम्न anatomical clues useful हो सकते हैं:
- क्या vascular tissues का arrangement typical pattern से अलग है?
- क्या एक से अधिक cambial rings या successive cambia दिखाई दे रहे हैं?
- क्या additional vascular tissues या unusual vascular groups मौजूद हैं?
- क्या secondary thickening किसी special meristematic region से जुड़ी है?
- क्या mature stem में unusual concentric या patch-like vascular arrangement बन गया है?
इन observations से यह समझने में मदद मिलती है कि stem का secondary thickening pattern typical model से किस तरह अलग है।

Normal secondary growth में एक अपेक्षित cambial organization प्रमुख होता है, जबकि anomalous secondary growth में modified cambial activity, additional meristems, successive cambia या special thickening mechanisms के कारण अलग anatomical pattern बन सकता है।
अब इन general mechanisms को वास्तविक plants की anatomy से जोड़ना जरूरी है। Tinospora इसका पहला specific example है, जिसमें stem की secondary growth को उसके विशेष vascular arrangement और developmental changes के आधार पर समझा जाता है।
